A few weeks ago, we packed up our gear and took a much-needed break out in western Nebraska. Our destination? Toadstool Geologic Park. If you haven’t been, put it on your list. The landscape feels like stepping onto another planet. Towering rock formations, wind-sculpted hills, and exposed layers of time all around you. We spent the weekend camping, hiking, and marveling at ancient fossils embedded in the rocks—some of which are millions of years old. The dry, rugged terrain made it feel like we were in a desert, yet it was right here in our home state.
After the trip, we slowly made our way back to Lincoln with one important stop—visiting the Sandhill Cranes. Seeing cranes gather during their migration is something every Nebraskan should experience at least once. There’s something deeply grounding about watching them feed and dance across the fields with that distinctive call echoing in the air. It’s a short seasonal window, but it’s worth planning your spring around.
From rocky badlands to graceful birds, Nebraska really does surprise you when you take the time to explore it. Whether you’re into geology, birdwatching, or just need a little adventure, these places are close to home and full of life.
